Visual Clay Art

Role: Director, Producer, Editor

Promotional Video

John Terlip is the creator of Visual Clay Art, a vehicle for teaching and inspiring others through working with clay.

He knew that he needed to make a video to establish an identity for his brand of workshops. He reached out not yet knowing what approach to take. I asked him to provide a few videos from other artists and any written thoughts on his theory of ceramics, art and spirituality – themes that his workshops are built upon. I advised that one of the video’s main purposes should be to highlight his personality, his warmth and his enthusiasm for his project.

Over two meetings, we distilled our ideas into a shoot schedule, an outline, and a loose script for an interview. Over the span of a month we gathered footage of him working alone in the studio and leading a workshop, in addition to filming the interview itself. Though John did not have much experience speaking on camera, with direction and editing, his natural charm and willingness to make a positive impact on other peoples’ lives comes across superbly.

The video has been instrumental in attracting new clients to the workshops and has been a mirror to reflect the tenants of John’s philosophy back to him. John has said that the video has helped him to orient Visual Clay Art as a brand and has also acted as a catalyst for new ideas for future development.
